Understanding Elbow Dysplasia:
Canine elbow dysplasia (ED) is a condition involving multiple developmental abnormalities of the elbow joint. The elbow joint is a complex joint made up of three bones (radius, ulna, and humerus). If these bones don’t fit together perfectly due to growth abnormalities, it can cause pain, lameness, and arthritis. The forces on the elbow due to the poor fit between the bones can lead to permanent loss of cartilage, bone cracks, and sometimes fractures of the coronoid process, a small bone inside the elbow. This small bone then acts like a pebble in a shoe, causing permanent pain and discomfort.
